Avery Fountain

Avery plans on taking a gap year, during which she'll be participating in a farming exchange program, volunteering to teach English abroad, and going to a writing workshop. Later, she hopes to attend Sarah Lawrence College to major in either English or education.

Her greatest achievement over the past four years was being admitted to Grimsley’s most prestigious singing group, The Madrigals. As someone passionate about singing since elementary school, she was proud to have years of voice lessons pay off by earning a spot.

Her favorite class at Grimsley was conclusively Madrigals. Though Avery only had the class for a semester, she regrets not joining sooner; she describes the class as a period catering perfectly to her niche interests of singing renaissance music and custom-made dresses. She also treasured her classmates, who were always there to catch her when she fainted. Similarly, her favorite Grimsley tradition is singing the Alma Mater every Friday. After three years of hearing it rounding off the week, singing with the Madrigals felt like helping to build the tradition.

Avery's advice to any current or rising students is: “Don’t spread yourself too thin—pick what you’re passionate at and stick with it! It was tempting for me to join as many clubs and activities as possible, but I think it started to affect my performance in school, and I wasn’t really enjoying it all. Experiment as much as you’d like, but don’t do everything just because you feel like you have to!”

In the future, Avery is most excited to travel once things are back to normal. She plans on setting off to see the world. After receiving her teaching certificate, she plans to move to Central America to teach English as a second language.
